On May 19, 2025, the Cannes Film Festival will host the world premiere of Highest 2 Lowest, the new film by Spike Lee, presented out of competition. This work marks the fifth collaboration between the director and Denzel Washington, their first since Inside Man in 200.

A Contemporary Remake of a Japanese Classic

Highest 2 Lowest is a modern adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s film High and Low, itself inspired by Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom. Set in present-day New York, the film follows a music mogul, played by Denzel Washington, faced with a moral dilemma following a ransom demand. The cast also includes A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Aubrey Joseph and Ice Spice.

The May 19 screening coincides with the 36th anniversary of Do the Right Thing, Spike Lee’s iconic film presented at Cannes in 1989. It is also the centenary of the birth of Malcolm X, a historical figure whose life was brought to the screen by Lee in 1992 with Denzel Washington in the lead role.
